Knitting
Great Beginner Set of Knitting Needles
This set has a bit of everything. You can work on a blanket with the long round needles, or a dishcloth or scarf on the single pointed needles. I love working with Bamboo Needles because they are quiet, and warm. I find metal needles make noise when I knit, and can be cold in my hands.
My favourite Knitting Needle Set:
Double Pointed Needles
Have you noticed how much quieter knitting is while using bamboo needles? Many sizes in this set that are perfect for many size projects. Double pointed needles are great for working in the round, like making a hat, or sweater.
Cable Needles
A great set of cable needles are a must if you want to start working cables. I love metal cable needles. Sometimes cables can be tight and plastic will break much easier. These are best for longevity.
Crochet
Ergonomic Crochet Hooks
These hooks have a nice silicone handle that feels nice in your hands. Great for if your hands get sore while crocheting.
Multi-Purpose Crochet Set
This is a wonderful set of all different crochet tools, and some for knitting as well.
Good For Both Crafts
Stitch Markers
These are great removeable markers, that work when knitting or crocheting.
Yarn
This is my favourite all around yarn. Its wonderfully soft, and is great to work with. Its a great medium weight. I love it for scarves, hats and even blankets. It comes in dozens of colours and is perfect for either knitting or crochet.
Loops & Threads Impeccible Yarn
So soft and wonderful for baby items, sweaters. I do find it too slippery for hats, but it feels so nice as a scarf or cowl.
Self Striping or Ombre Yarn
This is my favourite for colour changing yarn. It’s great for hats, blankets, scarves, etc. I love how the colours work together and look so nice.
Cotton
This is my favourite for dishcloths! I’ve also made hats with it too, but its a lot heavier than the acrylic above, its also warmer. They have about a dozen solid colours and about the same in the variegated options. Insider Tip: The variegated yarn has less than the solid balls in Handicrafter Cotton!
That’s it. That should be plenty to get you started. Everything on the list is available at Michael’s, Amazon or Walmart. There are tons of indie yarn dyers, and artisans, which also have many options and colourways. These are a great option, but if you’re new to knitting or crochet, you’re usually not very good, so why not buy some inexpensive yarns and tools to help you decide if you like it, and get better at yarn tension.
