Happy Thanksgiving!!! Crochet Pumpkins for All (Easy Level)

Thanksgiving is this weekend here in Canada, and its one of my favourite weekends! Last weekend, we started prepping dinner, like making cabbage rolls and freezing them for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is considered the true start to fall around here.

Also, right around the corner is Halloween, which is a lot of fun for our kids. They start asking when we’re getting a pumpkin as soon as the local farm stand has them out front.

BUT, wouldn’t it be fun to make some little ones that we could use for decorations around the house this time of year?!? Try placing them on your mantle, or use as a centerpiece for your holiday table.

Note: I’m using a crochet fabric (see below for how to make it) to make my pumpkins, but you could also use a knit fabric and follow the same steps for construction. Maybe try a knit 1, purl 4, to create a fun ribbed look!

For this tutorial, we are using 2 colours of fall coloured yarn, some stuffing, our crochet hook and a darning needle.

How to Construct your Pumpkins

These are simple and easy. You can use any stitch you like to make the fabric panel. I made a long rectangle and then stitched the 2 ends together to make a tube. (Match the right sides together, the sides you want to see are inside.)

Then stitch around the top and bottom, cinching the ends tight to form a tighter circle. Be sure to stuff it before you sew the top or you won’t be able to after.

Finally, I tied a knot in the tail when I finished sewing each end so it couldn’t come loose. Then you can tuck you ends inside, or weave them in.

To make a little stem for the top, you can use a stick, or grab a new strand of yarn, I used dark brown, but it was very hard to see what I was doing, on camera.

Chain 5, and slip stitch to the first chain. chain 1, and single crochet into each stitch around and around until you reach your desired stem length, whether short or long.
Use a longer tail from your stem to sew the stem onto the top of the pumpkin to hide the top hole.

Crochet Fabric for the Pumpkin Body

Now if you want to make the fabric panel that will turn into this cute pumpkin with the knit looking ribbing then let’s use camel stitch to make it!

Sizing: Small Green: 17 stitches x 21 Rows
Med Dark Green(from the video below): 20 stitches x 25 Rows
Large Burgundy: 24 stitches and 30 Rows

Begin by chaining the number of stitches for the pumpkin size you want to make.

Row 1: HDC into the 3rd chain from your hook, and then each stitch across.
Row 2: ch 2. hdc camel stitch across the row.

The purple line shows the part of the stitch that you will insert your hook under.

To make hdc camel stitch, insert your hook into the lower loop shown above by my crochet hook. It runs horizontally across beneath the regular V that we normally crochet into. Insert your hook under it and draw up your loop, then yarn over and draw through all 3 loops, to finish your hdc.

Repeat Row 2, until you reach desired size.

Now keep in mind that as you are working each row, they will become the vertical rows of the pumpkin, so the length of your fabric is how big your pumpkin will be around the outside (the circumference). The number of stitches on each row determines the height of your pumpkin.
