How to Herringbone Single Crochet Stitch: Day 14

herringbone single crochet

Welcome to Day 14 in #30stitchesin30days! Today, we’re showing a fun and interesting variation of the single crochet: herringbone single crochet! I am so excited to share it with you!

For this stitch pattern, you can use any number of chains to get started, just do one more than the total stitch length you want.

For the first row, insert your hook into the chain the normal way, after doing the herringbone modification.

Right Side Row:

Step 1: begin the row with a chain stitch. Then insert your hook into the right-most strand of the chain, shown below by my hook.

Step 2: Insert your hook the normal way into the stitch below.

Step 3: Yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over once more and draw through all 3 loops on your hook.

Step 4, The next stitch: First insert your hook into this vertical part of the previous stitch, then down into the next stitch. Finish as in Step 3 above.

Continue working Step 4 across the Right Side row.

Wrong Side

To work the wrong side row: Chain 1, as before.

Step 1: Insert your hook, into the side of the chain stitch(same as above)

Step 2: Swing your hook around behind your yarn.

Step 3: Insert your hook into the next stitch from back to front, with yarn in front as well.

Step 4: catch your working yarn, and with a small twist, draw a loop up and to the back, then yarn over and draw through all 3 loops to finish the stitch.

Follow the same process for stitch 2, using the vertical bar to insert your hook under it for the second stitch, and then follow from step 2 above.

Continue following rows:

Row 1: chain 1, herringbone sc (HSC) across.

Row 2: chain 1, reverse herringbone sc (RHSC) across.

Repeat rows 1 & 2.

So that’s it, but I feel like that may have been a bit confusing, so the video tutorial is below, if you’d like to see this one in action. It really is so lovely and I can’t wait to see the beautiful things you make with it. I may use it for a fun alternative in a hat body… We’ll see…

Anyway, tag us on Instagram if you’re showing off your beautiful things you’re making with our tutorials. @purple.rose.crafts
