Here are some beginner tips for getting started with mosaic crochet charts!
So these ones look complicated, but once you understand how to read the chart, they actually are pretty simple.
Some Tips before we start:
- Use 1 colour per row. You need at least 2 contrasting colours, recommending the same yarn for both.
- Alternating each row.
- Always worked from right to left on the right side of your work. I personally think working mosaic in the round is easier, but when working flat, you will continue fastening off at the end of each row, and work the next colour from the right edge, on the right side of your work again.
- Working with 2 stitches, back loop single crochet(blsc) and long single crochet(lsc), worked down over the row below.
- To follow the chart, ignore the colours, follow the colour shown in the first stitch at the beginning of the row, and the x represents the long sc. Every blank square is a blsc except at the beginning and end of the row, they are both regular sc. The colours are showing what your pattern will look like, but the x’s show how you get there.
Today’s pattern and chart will make a simple coaster, or mug rug, with fun tassels so you don’t have to weave in all the ends from each row.
Our chart below shows multiples of 5 stitches for each repeat + 1, and 6 rows.
For the mug rug I made, I used a light (3) yarn, Lion Brand Coboo in denim and sky blue, and began with 25 stitches, +1. Fasten off at the end of each row. Try this one!
Row 1: Begin by chaining 26, then single crocheting into the second chain from my hook and each stitch across.
Row 2: Back at the beginning of the row, insert your hook into the first chain from the previous row. Yarn over and draw up a loop of the other colour. chain 1, and single crochet across.
Row 3: Draw up a loop with Colour 1, chain, and single crochet across.
Row 4: (Pattern begins here) Draw up and chain with colour 2. BLSC 3, *LSC, BLSC 4* Repeat across. End row with LSC.
Row 5: Attach Colour 1, ch, sc, lsc, *3blsc, 2lsc* at the end of the row you should have 2 blsc, before the regular sc. Fasten off.
Row 6: Attach colour 2. Chain 1, sc in first st, *blsc, lsc, 2blsc, lsc* you will finish the row with a lsc, blsc, and regular sc.
Row 7: Attach colour 1, chain 1, sc in first st, 2blsc, *long sc, 3blsc* ending the row with a long sc, and a regular sc.
Row 8: Attach colour 2: ch, sc, long sc, *3blsc, 2lsc*, repeat * to * end the row with 2 blsc, and a regular sc.
Row 9: Attach Colour 1: chain, sc, blsc, *lsc, blsc, lsc, 2blsc* Repeat across, ending with lsc, blsc, sc.
Repeats: Rows 4-9, Total 6 Rows.
