I made a BIG mistake! Learn to undo knitting mistakes

un-knit or tink pinterest pin

Today’s tutorial was supposed to be a pretty baby hat made on single pointed needles. It was going to be so super simple, for beginners.

BUT, when I started the top decrease section, I made a huge mistake and ended up having to pick up and undo like a row and a half. I was so disappointed.

However, I decided that my mistake is now your benefit. Awhile ago, I published a video and post that discussed how to fix your stitches if you are on the next row and realize you made a mistake. This was awesome and I got a lot of great feedback from people who didn’t know you could fix stitches this way.

This time, we’re going to un-knit, and un-purl, or tink, which is knit backwards. I did not invent the word. I think I learned what it meant in a Facebook group. Cute, though, right?

Anyway, let’s get into the tutorial.

Un-Knit

To pick up a knit stitch, insert your left needle into the center of the knit stitch so the strand of yarn on the right side comes over the front of the left needle. See the picture below. Lift off your right needle and remove your stitch from the one you just put back onto your left needle.

Un-Purl

To pick up a purl stitch, insert the same as a knit, with your needle into the center, putting the strand on the right to the front. Lift off your right needle and remove your stitch from the one you just put back onto your left needle.

Watch the tutorial below for these in action.

So next time we knit, I will introduce that hat tutorial, for beginners, on single pointed needles. Fortunately, my mistake can be your gain. I hope you have learned how to knit in reverse, so you can correct a mistake on the same row you’re working on. See this post for the tutorial showing how to correct stitches on the next row.
