So, today is December 30th, 2020! It’s simply mind-blowing how a year that was so utterly nuts and felt like it moved so slowly, went by so fast. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad its over, but wow! There were definitely times when I felt like it was going by so slowly. If you’re joining us for the first time, welcome! Today, we’re going to learn a relatively easy crochet stitch called the waffle stitch. When complete, it definitely looks like the squares of a waffle, not like a round Eggo, but a fun square!
To do this, we’re going to learn a new stitch called Front Post Double Crochet and below I’ll include the written pattern for this super cute waffle stitch dishcloth. I made this one for my kid’s teachers for Christmas gifts and they loved them! This stitch could easily be used for a scarf or, with some modification, even a hat. I love the way the cotton yarn holds up when we make out dishcloth!
So, to make the waffle stitch, we’re going to use a Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC). FPDC is similar to a standard double crochet, but we insert our hook around the main body of the stitch instead of through the top! Let’s break it down!
To get started, you can chain any multiple of 3 stitches, and add 2 more chains, or foundation double crochet(FDC) a multiple of 3 stitches, plus 1 more. For our swatch we have 14 chains, dc into the 3rd chain from our hook, and the next 11 chains, to make 13, or 13 FDC. If you need help learning how to do these, check out this post.
For the first pattern row: chain 2, now our pattern will be: *2FPDC, DC* repeat to the end of the row.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
To make our front post double crochet, we’re going to insert our hook around the body of the double crochet from our first row.
Yarn over, and finish off the same as a double crochet.
In this image, you can see the difference between the FPDC on the right and the regular dc on the left.
Now, make a second one beside the first. and finish our repeat with a double crochet in the top of the stitch below.
Continue the repeat across your row! That’s it for the FPDC. Not too hard, right? Let me know in the comments below if you had any trouble with this one! Also, I have the YouTube video below that explains the waffle stitch as well.
Waffle Stitch Dishcloth Pattern

Row 1: Chain 32, dc into 3rd chain from hook and each chain across, or FDC 31.

Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until cloth is square. Cut yarn and pull through. Weave in ends.
That’s it for this tutorial. If you make this cloth, tag us in a pic on Instagram, and we’ll share it to our stories! Thanks for hanging out with us today!
