Hey friends! Welcome back! Today, we’re going to work on a different cable pattern, Lattice Cables, that you are going to love.
We are incorporating purls into the cabling so its important that you have done cables a few times before you attempt this one.
I’ve done 3 previous cabling patterns, the original, celtic woven which is similar to the one we’re doing today, and braided!
I really hope you love this one as much as I do. It really is lovely.
The Knit flat pattern is the one we do in the video below. I’ve also included a FREE Hat pattern below the video that you may wish to try.
We are transferring 2 stitches at a time to the cable needle for this pattern, and will purl off the cable needle, some of the time, to create more of a 3D effect within the fabric. It was a lot of fun to try, and working out how to decrease and try to stay in pattern as much as I could was fun too. I hope you like this pattern and have fun knitting up this hat. Lattice Cables Knit Flat
How to do the Cable Rows:
2/2R = Slip 2 Hold in Back: Knit 2 + Knit 2 on Cable Needle
2/2L = Slip 2 Hold in Front: Knit 2 + Knit 2 on Cable Needle
2/2RP = Slip 2 Hold in Back: Knit 2 + Purl 2 on Cable Needle
2/2LP = Slip 2 Hold in Front: Purl 2 + Knit 2 on Cable Needle
Starter Rows:
ROW 1: * K4, P2 * (repeat pattern within asterisks)
ROW 2: K2, P4 *
LATTICE CABLE REPEAT PATTERN ROWS
- ROW 1: (right side): * 2/2R, P2 *
- ROW 2: (wrong side): * K2, P4 *
- ROW 3: P2, * K2, 2/2RP *, K4 last 4 stitches
- ROW 4: * P4, K2 *
- ROW 5: * P2, 2/2L *
- ROW 6: * P4, K2 *
- ROW 7: K4, * 2/2LP, K2 *, P2 last 2 stitches
- ROW 8: * K2, P4 *
Below, I’ve included instructions for turning the ‘in the round’ version into a hat pattern with decreases, etc. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.
Lattice Cables Knit Hat Pattern
Size: child/baby, but modifiable for various sizes. We use a multiple of 12 stitches.
Materials: Medium/worsted weight (4) in a solid colour about 100g I used Craft Smart Acrylic from Michaels, in pink and purple, but feel free to use any worsted weight yarn, like my favourite, Loops & threads impeccable.
4.5 & 5 mm 12” long round needle, or DPN’s
Stitches used:
Knits & purls; Cables below:
Cables: 2/2R = Slip 2 Hold in Back: Knit 2 + Knit 2 on Cable Needle
2/2L = Slip 2 Hold in Front: Knit 2 + Knit 2 on Cable Needle
2/2RP = Slip 2 Hold in Back: Knit 2 + Purl 2 on Cable Needle
2/2LP = Slip 2 Hold in Front: Purl 2 + Knit 2 on Cable Needle
Instructions:
Start with smaller needles.
CO 60 stitches. (For larger child begin with 84; For adult, use 108) Do not twist and begin knitting in the round.
Knit 2 purl 2 for 1.5-2” (or 5” if you want to make a double thick hat brim turn your brim up before beginning the pattern section, or sew it inside at the end)
Change to larger needles.
Set up rows: Row 1: * K4, P2 * (repeat * to * around)
Row 2: *K2, P4*
Begin Lattice cables below. For baby, small child, do only once below. Repeat this section 2 time for larger child, or 3 times for adult, then skip to decreases below.
Row 1: * 2/2R, P2 *
Row 2: * K4, P2 *
Row 3: P2, * K2, 2/2RP *, K4 last 4 stitches
Row 4: * P2, K4 *
Row 5: * P2, 2/2L *
Row 6: * P2, K4 *
Row 7: K4, * 2/2LP, K2 *, P2 last 2 stitches
Row 8: * K4, P2 *
Decreases
Start on a row after a cable row. We will do all our decreases between the cable rows.
Row 1: Purl 2 together(p2tog), on every other group of 2 purls. Knit all the knits. Your repeat looks like this: knit 4, p2tog, knit 4, p
Row 2: Cable in pattern (if you have to put purls on your cable needle, only do how many you have left)
Row 3: Purl 2 together on the opposite group of purls.
Row 4: Cable in pattern.
Row 5: This row we will work on opposite purls again, so knit 2 together with the purl and first knit of a cable section. It will look like this: knit 2 together, knit 3, purl, knit 4 repeat around.
Row 5: Cable in pattern.
Row 6: Now we will get rid of our last purl stitches. so k2tog when you get to your purl, and knit every other stitch on the row.
Row 7: At this point, you will only do cross 4 front, and cross 4 back.
When you get down to 15-20 stitches, cut your yarn at about 8″ long, thread onto a yarn needle, and sew through all the stitches. Cinch it tight and weave in the ends. Now, you’re done!
The cabling is nice and thick and makes it lovely and warm. I hope you love this pattern as much as I do. The AD FREE version will be available in our shop.
