Knit an Easy Farmhouse Dishcloth – For Beginners

I like giving these homemade dishcloths to my kid’s teachers at school, bus drivers, etc. as Christmas gifts. I love that they are useful, homemade and you can pretty much guarantee that none of the other kids will be giving their teachers these beauties. I’ve also seen them sold at markets or on Etsy for around $25 for 3 of them. If you are brand new to knitting, check out this post first, to learn the basic stitches we’re going to use here.

This pattern is so versatile. You can use any cotton yarn, from single colour, variegated, or striped, and gauge doesn’t really matter. That’s why this is a perfect beginner pattern for knitting. The stitches are so simple, with lots of repeating, so you’ll get lots of practice. And it’s a smaller item, so you can even finish it quickly.

Stitches we’re using

Stitches used: knit (k), yarn over (yo), knit 2 together(k2tog), Cast on & Cast off (CO)

Try this cast on method for complete beginners.

To make a yarn over (YO), bring your yarn to the front, by passing it between your needles. Then loop it over your right needle, and insert your needle for the next stitch.

To make a Knit 2 together (k2tog), insert your needle into the next 2 stitches, knitwise, meaning like a knit stitch, wrap yarn like your knitting just one stitch. Bring needle back through, with 1 new stitch on it, and loop off both stitches. Simply, insert your needle into 2 stitches and knit as if it is just 1 stitch.

As a simple cast off, knit your first 2 stitches on the row. Then, pick up the first, and pass it over the second, so only 1 remains. knit the next stitch on the left needle and repeat.

Materials

Materials: Cotton yarn, I like Bernat Handcrafter Cotton

5mm knitting needles(single pointed) or as recommended by your chosen yarn.

Pattern

CO 4
Knit 4
K2, YO, knit to end *repeat this row until you reach your desired size.
To measure your size, place measuring tape at the cast on row, and measure along the edge to your knitting needle.
K, k2tog, YO, k2tog, k to end *repeat until you have 4 stitches left on needle.
Cast off & Weave in ends.
