I am so excited to share this tutorial with you!! I love these African flowers so much and they’re so much fun to create and I was in love with these super cute animals made from them that I found one day on Pinterest!
While I didn’t actually make one of those animals, I still love the African flowers! They can be used for so many things, like blankets, or coasters, bags, or these fun stuffed animals!
So, we made the African Flower Granny Square awhile back and its one of my most popular videos and posts and as such, I wanted to do another with a modern twist! The hexagons have such a fun and modern element that make them a great addition to any pattern book!
African Flower Hexagon
For this tutorial, I’m using a 4.5mm crochet hook, and some medium/worsted weight yarn.
Abbreviations: chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip st (sl st), long sc (L sc)
Special stitches: L sc, sc into the stitch 2 rows back to create a long stitch.
Beginning with your magic loop, chain 2, loop the tail around into a circle and dc over both strands, ch1. Repeat: dc2, ch, 5 more times for a total of 6, then slip st to the top of the chains. Gently pull on your tail to tighten the center of the circle. Change to colour 2.
Row 2: ch 2, 3dc into the base of the chains. *skip to next chain space, dc4 into the space,* Repeat from * around. Sl st to top of the chains at the beginning of the row.
Row 3: ch 2, *skip 2 stitches, sc, skip to chain space, dc5,* Repeat around. At the last section, with the chains, dc4 and sl st to the top of the chains. Change back to colour 1.
Row 4: ch, sc into next 2 stitches, at the top of the petal, sc2, sc into the next 2 stitches, to the sc from the previous row. make a long sc over the sc from the previous row, into the row below. Continue sc around, with long sc between the petals, and 2sc at the top of each petal. then slip st to the chain at the beginning of the row.
Row 5: ch, sc around, with 2sc at the top of each petal.
Invisible finish: Just before the slip st to end the row, cut your yarn and pull the loop so your tail comes out and there is 1 strand coming out of the top of the last stitch. Thread your yarn onto a darning needle.
Take your darning needle and insert it front to back through the chain stitch at the beginning of the row.
Then, insert your needle back down through the top of your stitch, (where your yarn came out) and have it come out the back of that chain loop at the top.
Weave in your ends and you’re all done! I can’t wait to see what you create with these! What’s your plan? A blanket? A stuffed animal? or maybe a sweater? Check this one out on my Pinterest Board! So much fun! Let me know down below if you’d like me to do a tutorial of this one!
