How to Crochet Camel Stitch (Easy Level)

So, camel stitch is a super pretty stitch that creates an almost knit-like rib on your fabric. I can just see the possibilities with this stitch. I’ve been loving this cowl by Yarn & Chai lately and would love to make it, see it below on the right. It was my inspiration for this patten. Today, we’re going to make that lovely teal Camel stitch Granny Square below, and watch for an upcoming video and tutorial for a super cute twisted headband.

This stitch has also been called the third loop stitch as well, so if you’re already familiar with that one, then skip down to the bottom for the granny square pattern. We are also using our foundation half double crochet stitches for the foundation row, so if you’ve never done those before, then watch the video below, or check out this post, or you can always use the chain row, and then hdc into each chain to get to the same spot.

How to Crochet Camel Stitch

So, in order to create the camel stitch, we start with our half double crochet foundation row. then we will chain 2, and turn our work around. Now, we will begin working hdc into the 3rd loop shown with the arrow in the center picture on the left, below.

We are usually looking at the front and back loops on the top of the stitches, but in this case, we’re working into that third loop below those top 2. That is really the only difference to creating the camel stitch, from a regular half double crochet. It is definitely better seen from the back of the stitch, but could also be worked in the round, like for a hat. From the front, you just work your stitch over top and down behind, into the same third loop.

I think it makes sense to try a the back and forth method, shown below, and then once you have the hang of it, work it in the round. Either way, it’s a lovely stitch, and can be worked so many different ways. I get excited to see what you try it out on! Don’t forget to tag us on Instagram!
