I am so excited about this corner to corner(C2C) heart panel. I’m going to make a second solid square and turn it into a pillow cover. My daughters are going to love it!
Today is a very beginner tutorial about how to read and follow a C2C chart to make a picture. You may have seen graphgans on Pinterest or YouTube. This is a basic and beginner friendly version of one of those to get you comfortable reading the chart.
It is important to note, that you must already understand how to crochet in corner 2 corner. If you need to learn that first, check out this post. We use starting blocks, working blocks and how to decrease so you can make it a square.
It is simple enough because we’re only using 2 colours, but when working the heart section you will need to break your white, or main colour (MC), to do each heart, or accent colour (AC) row. I recommend having 2 balls of the same colour for either side of the heart, or use some of one ball to make a second ball to use on the other side. If you choose to cut your yarn each time, you’ll just have a lot more ends to weave than if you use a second ball for the other side of the row.
How to read a C2C chart
I’d be willing to bet that, with a couple of modifications, any knitting chart would work as a C2C chart. Instead of reading across the row, we read on the diagonal.
Below is the chart we used for the pattern. You may notice the numbers are mimicked long the bottom and right side. This is to make it easy when following a row. You may want to put a pen or ruler along the row to ensure you are on the right row.
For ease, I’ve also written out the pattern in words if you’d rather do it that way. I will also post it in my shop, with a rainbow version of the heart chart below as well.
C2C Heart Pillow Cover Pattern
Size: 13.5″ x 13.5″ with Red Heart Cozy(4) and a 5mm crochet hook.
Work diagonally from Row 1.
Work 15 rows of Main Colour(MC) increasing on each row.
Row 16(From right side): Starting block, and 4 more blocks. Switch to Accent colour(AC), for 6 blocks. Switch back to white for 5 blocks.
Row 17(From bottom): Starting block, and 4 more. Switch to AC, make 6 AC blocks, Finish the row with 6 MC blocks.
Row 18(From right side): Starting block and 4 more with MC, Switch to AC, Make 7 with AC, Finish with 6 MC Blocks.
Row 19(From bottom): Starting block and 6 more, AC for 7 blocks, finish with 5 blocks of MC.
Row 20(From right side): Starting block and 5 more with MC, switch to AC, make 7 blocks with AC, switch back to MC, finish with 7 blocks of MC.
Row 21(From bottom left): With MC, 8 blocks of MC (1 starting block and 7 working blocks), work 7 blocks with AC, finish with 6 blocks of MC.
Row 22(From top): Begin decreasing. Slip stitch across the top of the block to the opposite corner, begin working blocks, 6 blocks of MC, switch to AC, make 7 blocks, switch back to MC, make 7 blocks to finish
Row 23(From left side): Slip stitch over to make more working blocks, make 7 working blocks with MC, switch to AC, make 7 AC blocks. Switching back to MC, make 5 to finish the row.
Row 24(From top): Slip stitch over to make more working blocks, make 8 MC blocks. Switch to AC for 4 blocks, and finish with 6 blocks of MC.
Row 25(From left side): slip stitch across the top, then work 6 blocks of MC, 4 blocks of AC, and finish with 7 blocks of MC.
Row 26(From top): slip stitch across the top, then work 7 blocks of MC, 4 blocks of AC, and finish with 5 blocks of MC.
Row 27(From left side): slip stitch across the top, then work 5 blocks of MC, 4 blocks of AC, and finish with 6 blocks of MC.
Row 28(From top): slip stitch across the top, then work 6 blocks of MC, 3 blocks of AC, and finish with 5 blocks of MC.
Row 29(From left side): slip stitch across the top, then work 5 blocks of MC, 3 blocks of AC, and finish with 5 blocks of MC. END of heart section.
Row 30-41: Keep working decreasing clocks with MC until you have only 1 block left. Fasten off.
Now, you may wish to make a second block the same, use a different colour for the heart so it’ll be reversible, or make a solid one and to use as the back side of a pillow cover. You could also make multiple hearts and do a blanket. Check out my Pinterest Board for inspiration.
