Hey friends, I’ve been working on so many projects and videos lately, and I’ve been slow to get the editing done. Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in the day, but I digress. Today, I have a wonderful granny square bag tutorial today. I’ve included the chart for the granny square, found on Pinterest, but let me know in the comments, if you want a full tutorial for it on its own.
If you want to start at the beginning and learn the individual stitches, and basics of granny squares, click the links.

For this pattern, I am using some left over balls of yarn. All of them are open and you may have even seen them in a different tutorial. I grabbed my favourite 5mm crochet hook. Its an ergonomic hook that doesn’t cause me any pain. Even when I crochet for too many hours to count. The light pink and purple yarns were Value brand from Michaels, the grey is Bernat Premium, and the Bright Pink was Red Heart Comfort.
How to Turn Granny squares into a bag

This version of the bag pattern uses 13 granny squares, but there are many versions of this style of bag pattern. I used a starburst pattern granny square for this bag, but you can use any pattern you like. Check out my Pinterest Board for ideas. I also really like the Sunflower one, but I couldn’t find the brown yarn, and I’m sure my husband would love it if I didn’t add to my stash anytime soon.

Once you have your 13 squares, place them in the pattern shown here and begin attaching them together. Follow the arrows, and use any method you like to attach. I used slip stitches.
Fold over so that centre square is folded in half, bringing the 2 sides showing the arrows together and continue attaching the rest of the squares to each other, so it looks like the bag below.

Now, we’ll finish off with 2 handles and edging.
Handles
Attach your handle colour, 1 stitch to the outside of 1 of the corners, chain 50 stitches, or more if you want longer handles. slip stitch to the other side of the handle, chain 1, and slip stitch to the corner of the granny square. Then begin double crochets into each chain around your handle. Slip stitch to the corner again. Fasten off, and repeat for the second handle.
Finishing your Granny Square Bag
I finished off my bag with one of the contrasting yarns, attaching at the V corner between the top 2 squares. Single crochet up one side of the square, to the handle. Then all the way around the inside of the handle and then back down the other side. Fasten off. Do the same for the area between the handles as well, up and around the top of the handle, and the inside of the other handle. Weave in all your ends, and that’s it, you’re done.

Try some other granny square bag schematics, like these, also found on Pinterest. Do you sew? Perhaps, adding a lining and zipper to the top may also be fun. Check out the video tutorial below!
What granny squares projects or single squares would you like us to showcase next? I have lots of ideas, but I’m always open to your suggestions. I’m low-key loving that 24 square bag, in the middle. Which one is your favourite?
