New Knit Dishcloth Pattern: Mitered Square!

So, first things first, this pattern was inspired by the Mitered Square, from Drops Design, which uses simple yarn overs for the increases. I love the pattern, the stripes, everything except the holes. So if you’re like me, then this new style of the mitered square will be for you!

This is a simple and easy beginner-friendly pattern and if you need help learning how to do different increases, I talked about it in this post, with a couple of other increases that are ‘must-tries’ when learning to knit! You may also want to try out some of our other dishcloths like the farmhouse, and double seed.

In the video below, I also show a simple and very stretchy cast off as well which will add another tool to your knitting toolbox. You’ll be a pro in no time!

This pattern was so fun to knit and I just love the way the stripes came out. The original one I made used a variegated yarn, Psychadelic, and I didn’t love it as much as the solid or a striped yarn. What do you think? I felt like it was too busy. I’ll still use it because its definitely still functional, but I probably won’t gift it to anyone. I usually give my kids’ teachers dishcloths for Christmas. What do you like to do with yours? Gift them or just make for personal use?

The way we modified this one to prevent the holes on our increases, is by using the make 1 increase instead of the yarn over.

Make 1 Increase

To do the Make 1 Increase:

When you get to the place you need to do your increase, in this case, we will do them before the first stitch marker,

Insert your right needle into the strand below, and pick it up onto your right needle.

Insert your left needle, behind the new stitch, catching the back ‘leg’ of the stitch, from behind, giving the loop a twist.

Place it on the left needle. It should look like this.

Insert the right needle into the back of the loop and knit it through the back loop.

A Quick Tip: I used a round needle to make my cloth because the further you get into the pattern, the rounder and more bowl like your fabric will become, because you are working down 2 sides at the same time.

Mitered Square Pattern

Yarn: Bernat Handcrafter Cotton Striped or solid recommended

Size: 9″ square

Begin by casting on 5 stitches. Use any method you like to do to cast on, like the knitted or long tail.

Row 1: Knit 2 stitches, Increase, place a marker, knit 1, place a marker, knit the rest of the row.

Repeat Row 1 until your cloth measures the desired size. I measured mine like this. Keep in mind, if I was still working on the one below, the needle would be along the right side and across the top.

Check out the video tutorial below. We did a neat and super stretchy bind off in the video too. Check it out below!
