Moss stitch is very similar to seed stitch, in that it’s more of a double seed stitch, or a larger seed stitch. See in the image at left, we’re creating a 4 stitch cluster instead of the single stitch we used for the seed. It looks a bit complicated, but it’s actually very simple and creates an awesome texture for a dishcloth.
Now, what I’ve created is a modification to this pattern, which I thought was so lovely, but when I tried to make it, I struggled with the edges. So, I’ve used the moss stitch, but created a whole new pattern that edges the cloth in garter stitch to ‘fix’ the wonky edges I get when switching from knits to purls at the end and beginning of the rows. I am so in love with how it turned out, and love so much how the colours patterned themselves into this cool diagonal stripe pattern.
So when you create the garter stitch edging like this you can really put any pattern between it to create a dishcloth like this, but today, let’s do the moss stitch. Now it can be modified to be made into a scarf, or blanket, by casting on any multiple of 4 stitches, to get your desired width. Keep in mind, the 4 rows of garter stitch at the beginning and end make up about 1/2″ so you’ll want to stop your pattern rows about a half inch from the desired length for your item. This dishcloth is 9″ square, so when adding the garter rows at the beginning and end, I’d stop my pattern rows at 8 1/2″ to finish and keep my cloth square.

The pattern is worked in 4 repeating rows, of knits and purls, perfect for a beginner pattern.
Cloth Size: 9” square
What you need: Size 4.5mm needles & 1 50g ball of Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (Or a small amount from a big ball)
I used Anchor’s Away for this pattern
Cast on 40 stitches
First 4 rows: knit across.
1st pattern row: K4, *P2, K2* Repeat from * to * until last stitch 4 stitches, k last 4 stitches.
2nd row: (same as 1st) K4, *P2, K2* Repeat from * to * until last 4 stitches. K last 4 stitches
3rd row: K4, *K2, P2* Repeat from * to * until last 4 stitches. K last 4 stitches.
4th row: (Same as 3rd) K4, *K2, P2* Repeat from * to * until last 4 stitches. K last 4 stitches.
Repeat rows 1-4 until cloth measures 8 ½” and finish with 4 rows of knit. Cast off and weave in your ends.
