How to Crochet: Join as You Go Granny Squares -

Hey, I am so excited to discuss this alternative to our original video and post about joining granny squares! We’re discussing how to join as you go.

This method works well for several reasons:

You should have way less ends to weave in, and will save yarn.
You’ll be joining many squares at once, so it’s likely faster to join as well.
Its the perfect option if you’re keeping all of your squares the same, or are working in a specific pattern.

To begin, keep in mind you can use many different stitches to join squares, and you can use these styles of joining we did in our first post, but you can use this method of joining as a different pattern.

To use this technique of joining, align the first few of your squares, like the first 4 in a square. They will become the lower right squares on the image below. Begin with your desired method, join your yarn between the squares on the right side. Stitch them together. Then at the left side of those first 2 squares, turn and stitch together the lower square to the one to the left of it. Follow the blue arrow, in the image below. Fasten off.

To begin the second ‘row’, join your yarn on the right side of the second square. The image at right shows my crochet hook at the first spot you joined, and my fingers are showing the start of the second ‘row.’ Begin joining this square to the next one. Follow the coral arrows in the above image.

Continue joining, following the arrows, starting each new row on the right side, join by crocheting down and to the left. You’ll be moving your blanket every which direction, so just do your best to follow the image above and you’ll be all set.

In the image above, I used a slip stitch zig zag join, which I’ll show you now.

Zig Zag Slip Stitch Join

Insert your crochet hook into the corner stitch of one of your squares and draw up a loop. Now, insert your hook into the corner stitch of the other square, yarn over(in the back) and slip stitch. Insert into the second stitch on the first square, slip stitch. Continue working back and forth between the 2 squares slip stitching along.

When you reach the second corner, turn and work your way down the next side to continue joining as you go.
