New Granny Square! Braided Puff Stitch! -

So, I thought we haven’t had a granny square tutorial lately and I’ve been looking at this one for awhile and so here it is! So far we’ve made: African Flower, Circle, Daisy, Camel stitch, Celtic Weave, and the original granny. And we learned 3 ways to join them together. Pretty soon, we’re going to have to do borders! So, today we’re going to learn a new stitch and the pattern will be below for the granny square on its own. That way, if you came here from our YouTube video, you can skip to the bottom and get to the pattern.

We’re going to teach how to make this left leaning puff stitch. It works because the leaning stitch is worked back and forth, row over row, and with turning, we’re always creating a left leaning stitch.

Diagonal Puff Stitch

Skip 1 st(pic at left), dc into next one(pic below), make puff stitch into the skipped st: yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over hook, insert back into same st, yarn over and draw up another loop (5 loops on hook),

yarn over hook, insert back into same st, yarn over and draw up another loop (7 on hook),

yarn over hook, insert back into same st, yarn over and draw up another loop (9 on hook, pic at left),

Yarn over and draw through all 9 loops(pic to right), and chain to close the stitch(pic below).

Braided Puff Stitch Granny Square

Size: 4.5″ x 4.5″

You’ll need: small amount of Snuggly Wuggly by Loops and Threads. We’re using Teal for the main square and white for the border. You’ll also need a 3.5mm crochet hook and some scissors.

Abbreviations: FSC: foundation single crochet; ch: chain; st: stitch; dc: double crochet; sc: single crochet;

Row 1: FSC 14, ch 2. Turn

Row 2: Skip first st, do diagonal puff stitch pattern from above (dc in next st, and puff st over top, into skipped stitch), skip next st. Continue making diagonal puff stitches until you have 1 stitch left, dc.

Row 3: ch 2 repeat row 2, and continue repeating until you have completed 8 rows of puffs, and your square looks pretty much square.

Change to white, and depending on your size or choice, make a sc row or dc row around the outside of our square to finish. Weave in ends and attach to the next one on the blanket.
